I have been working as a software developer for the last 4 years in a C# .NET environment mostly.

I want to move out of Software Development into project management. How can I do this?

These are two diff areas. Development is more to do with machines and individual effort where as Proj mgmt is with people and team effort. For the start you can read the PMP handbook or some of the process stuff like SDLC, Agile etc. After that you can go for PMP certification or Prince cert.

I have recently graduated with a BS in Computer Science w/ an emphasis on Software Development. I have no professional experience whatsoever. No internships or anything. How can I get my foot in the door when everyone requires 2-3 yrs experience?

Best way is to get out the yellow pages and call businesses in your field and ask if you can fax over your resume and to who’s attention. Make sure the resume is for a specific job and not one of those generalized things that make employers think you have no idea what you want to do. They throw those away. Follow up in a week with the person who you faxed it to.

1.System Analyst => gathering the requirements for the software system , analyzing them , and representing them in diagrams and docs for the design team
2.System Designer =>how to create the system and the system architecture and structure
3.Programmer
4.Tester => unit,module, system, acceptance testing

I am planning to start Software Development business in India but I don’t want to register my business as a company. I won’t be having a office set up to do business. The business will be done at home. To do such a business do I need to register my business as a company with the government?

I dont think you need to worry about licesense to start a company specially in India, but going forward its always important to do it in a professional way. India rising demands its citizens to dream big so plan slowly and atleast go for a local coportation license which is cheap and get you a current account. Once you show with some payments flowing on your account you can always go for a loan to expand. No fun in doing software development if you cant think of expansion and making it to the stock market in india.

Think longer term if not now may be for brighter tommorow – go for a registered firm.

I am a small business owner, and I am spending about $25,000 this year for custom Software Development. I’ve never done this before, and I don’t know whether it is better for tax purposes to expense this cost or capitalize it?

It is a judgment call on your part. If you income this year is going to be small and you expect future years to be big, it would be better to depreciate or amortize the asset against income at a high tax rate. If you feel you need the write-off now, you can take it if you want to.

When applying for a job as a software developer, does open source development and college/university coursework count as work experience? or does it have to be a formal 9-5 job to count as experience?

No, coursework in classes is part of your education because most coursework is theoretical concepts working in ideal work projects with a teacher to help you out. Unless you created a working project of significant value that is impressive enough to mention, it all falls under "Education".

Experience comes from a job where many variables exist to cause all sorts of problems and you’ve proven that you can handle not only the work, but that you’ve made things work despite the problems in a production environment.

Believe me, work experience is nothing like class work. The education gives you a foundation to give you skills for a job, but the actual work in a job is a very different scenario in the real world.

What you need in the pay of computers depends on the course. I could have done my degree using only computers provided by the college.
