Yes, I would love to take classes in these software programs. I would especially enjoy it if they were paying, but a one weekend course to update on this info would be grand! I’ve looked into taking such courses, but everything around me is a 6 week or more commitment that I just can’t make right now.

I’m not sure what you are asking. A software developer is a role and the financial industry is an application where a software developer can apply his/her skills. A software developer working for manufacturing industry is still a software developer. Change of environment doesn’t change his/her role as a developer.

If you are asking what kind of work can a software developer do in the financial industry, then the answer is lots.

A developer could be developing front end software systems like ATM, asset trading, enrollments etc as well as continue maintenance to make sure software systems are in compliance with current regulations.

A developer could work on system integration. For example, when Bank of America and MBNA merged someone has to go make sure their systems work with one another. And every institution has to make sure that their system could work with data received from checks clearing house and federal reserve.

A developer could also work with backend data analysis – economics and statistical reports. Developing automated system to detect potential fraud and other criminal acts for example.

A developer could also work on implementation and integration of packaged solution like ERP, CRM etc.

Thanks. Just to clarify, we dont develop products but offer software development services for other companies, mostly small businesses. Any ideas on how we can market our services to target customers will be most helpful. Who should we contact? Who can we partner with? How can we get help on the sales front (on a commission basis). Are there existing forums or avenues for these? In short how can we get more clients and projects?

Check whats in development in sourceforge. The most active stuff is obviously the most active industries. Search google and yahoo ads to see what businesses are offering when you place "Software Development" and similar as keywords.

Most businesses don’t know they could be running more efficiently. For example, if you have a database program you could offer free evaluations to small shops and kiosks to tell them how much more efficient they could manage with your help. I’d recommend sending free evaluations to online groups or nearby salesmen about what your services can provide.

I just cant see businesses going out and saying, "make me a system that will make me more productive". It’s possible, but rare.

Educational groups like tutoring servies for standardized tests, and kids, are especially likely to benefit from software technologies.

i want to restrict the user from installing or uninstalling any software on a computer which has XP service pack 2. how can I do that without installing any Additional software?

You can make a guest account and don’t give them administrator privileges. that way they can log in but can’t install or uninstall any software.
It’s in the control panel, go to user accounts, then follow the instructions.

I saw an episode of Oprah last week that had an expert on child Internet safety. He demonstrated several programs and promoted one as his favorite. He said it could monitor everything that your kids do on a computer without them knowing. Did anyone see this episode and remember the name of the software?

I saw that episode of Oprah and it was very well presented, it gave the facts without being alarmist. The expert she had on was very informative.
